Custom garage doors
LP siding garage doors from National PreFinish.
Our LP doors all come from National PreFinish. They aren’t real wood: the face is LP, so they need far less maintenance and hold up against deterioration, and they can still be built to any design you like.

What is an LP siding garage door?
A steel-backed door with an LP face. LP is an engineered siding, the same kind of material many houses are clad in, and National PreFinish builds garage doors from it, so the door can match the siding beside it or set it off. From the street it reads as a wood door. Up close it’s a material made to stand up to the moisture and weather that wear real wood down, which is the reason to choose it.
4-layer or 5-layer?
- 4-layer. The LP face over a steel back, with an R-value of 9.
- 5-layer. A steel back with cladding, and an R-value of 14.
The extra layer matters most when there’s a bonus room over the garage, or when you heat or cool the space to work in. A garage that holds the cars and the mower will be comfortable enough behind the 4-layer door.
Which designs can you choose?
National PreFinish has five designs of its own: Xavier, Asher, Ivan, Vance and Maddie. Or skip them and design the door completely, the same as you could with real wood. After the design come three more choices:
- Groove or no groove between the boards.
- Wood grain or smooth on the face.
- The color: one of National PreFinish’s own, or Sherwin-Williams factory paint in the color you pick.
LP or real wood?
Real wood, from Carriage House, is for the homeowner who wants the real thing and will look after it. LP is for the one who wants the look and would rather not reseal a door every year. Both can be completely custom, and Clay can put samples of both in your hands. The real wood page has the other half of that comparison, and custom garage doors lays out all five starting points.
Whichever you choose, the door gets springs and an opener sized to its weight, and the same crew hangs it.

Answers
LP siding garage doors: questions people ask
Is an LP siding garage door real wood?
No. The face is LP, an engineered siding, laid over a steel back. It reads as wood from the street, but it doesn’t rot, check or need the yearly resealing a real wood door does, which is the point of choosing it.
What R-value does an LP garage door have?
National PreFinish builds two: a 4-layer door with a steel back at R-9, and a 5-layer door with a steel back and cladding at R-14. Pick the 5-layer when there’s a room above the garage or you heat and cool the space.
What are the National PreFinish garage door designs?
Xavier, Asher, Ivan, Vance and Maddie, each a different arrangement of boards and panels. If none of them suits the house, the door can be designed from scratch instead, with or without grooves and in a wood grain or smooth finish.
What colors do LP siding garage doors come in?
National PreFinish’s own range of colors, or factory paint in any Sherwin-Williams color, so the door can match the siding or the trim on the house exactly. Either way the finish is applied at the factory, not in your driveway.
